Organic Fruit Trees

I want to raise apple trees organically, and I’ve read that you can protect apples by enclosing them in sandwich bags. Does that really work? I’d love to harvest some bug-free, chemical-free fruit!
I have personal experience with this technique and it does work, although not perfectly, and I’ve found an alternative I like better.
I have more than 20 heirloom apple, pear and quince trees on dwarf rootstock in my garden, and I’ve been fighting a long, drawn-out and — until recently — losing war against codling moths, the insects that cause worms in fruit with cores.
By luck, an organic orchardist visited me last year and he suggested I stop my annual angst and respond to the problem with something simple and practical — bagging the fruit at petal fall, thus protecting it from all sorts of attacking insects. His simple advice was to use Ziploc sandwich bags, which seemed like a good idea.
The practical problem with using sandwich bags for this purpose is that, while you can zip them tight around a cluster of fruit, you must also snip off the bottom corners so moisture doesn’t build up inside. However, the open corners don’t drain water quickly enough after a heavy rain, and I’ve found that if too much water remains in the bag, the fruit starts to cook in its own steam on hot July days. The holes in the bags also provide access for curculio beetles, another obnoxious fruit pest. (They leave brown, smile-shaped scars on your apples, which means the apples have been impregnated with beetle babies.) By using plastic bags, I had some perfect, unsteamed apples, yet I thought there must be a better way, and, indeed, I’ve found a strategy that I recommend to small orchardists.
I decided to make drawstring bags out of row cover fabric, which is sold by garden supply companies. I sized the bags at 6 by 6 inches, which allows room for fruit expansion. This plan is better than using plastic bags because the fabric exposes the fruit to natural light that ripens it; the bags dry out quickly after a rain so the fruit isn’t subject to a contained, humid environment; and there are no holes for insects to exploit.
The success of such a bagging operation must include the successful control of wildlife, because raccoons and squirrels are extremely adept at destroying both the bags and the fruit. I’ve solved this problem by using Tanglefoot, a sticky, gluelike substance you paint on the bark of your fruit trees. After the critters touch Tanglefoot or a similar product (there are several), they won’t attempt to go up the trees.

Earth Day is April 22 2011
Hey Everyone! Earth day is coming...I know many of us feel we cannot make a big difference as individuals...But I am here to say YES WE CAN!!
Industry only supplies what WE demand...If everyone made just one change..the impact could be staggering!! In the 1990's I stopped using plastic sandwich bags and plastic wrap..Since then over 1400 LESS pieces of plastic go into to the landfill each year..lets do the math..1400 x 14 years = 19600 less pieces of plastic in the landfills Since 1997 alone!! That is just MY household..what if we ALL did that?? Lets see there are 33.4 MILLION people in Canada...308.7 MILLION people in the USA...if we allot just ONE piece of plastic per person 5 days a week...That is a STAGGERING 88.9 BILLION pieces of plastic going into the landfill EACH YEAR!!!
And that is only allotting each person in Canada and the US, ONE plastic sandwich bag a day..5 days a week.
HOLY MOUNTAIN OF PLASTIC BATMAN!
Now...I KNOW many of us have switched to recycled bags for grocery shopping...And that is WONDERFUL..SEE how industry has responded?
If we stop using another plastic product that is SO much easier to replace ( IE with tinfoil and waxed paper) Then we will have made a HUGE dent in the plastic garbage CHOKING the earth!!
So the challenge is this..Stop using ONE piece of plastic in your daily life..(I say sandwich bags and plastic wrap because they are the easiest and CHEAPEST to replace)...and By Earth day..the message will be CLEAR... ( no pun intended)
We want to be HEARD!!!
Please share this on facebook and any other place where is may get passed on..we CAN make a BIG difference with one SMALL change!!
Thanks!!

The Rebirth of Mother Earth
Although we all have differing views...There is one thing that is certain..unless we ALL do SOMETHING..our planet will not survive...well..it will actually..Natural disaster can come and sweep us all away..and Our mother will rebirth herself..She CAN live without us..but we CANNOT live without her!
If you listen to the following message..you can find a truth there that is universal...We MUST start making choices from our heart..not our minds or our wallet...I am not saying to throw it all away..that would create MORE problems..I AM saying...( as Anne of green gables said) Every day is a new start..fresh with NO mistakes in it...When faced with a choice..ask yourself this..which is the most LOVING way to do,deal or handle this...Loving for me, Loving for future generations, loving for everyone else. Then the choice will be clear..it's all about Love..Christ said it...but not everyone got the message...do EVERYTHING with loving intent..kinda hard to mess up when you look at it that way?

Homemade Laundry Soap
Clean and Fresh!
I Don't know about anyone else..But if I can find a way to save money and have quality at the same time? I will Try it at least once. I researched Laundry soap on the Internet. There seems to be a few recipes..but they all have 3 ingredients in common.
Arm and Hammer Washing Soda ( not Baking Soda)
Borax
and a bar of soap..sunlight, Ivory, Fels Naptha or even pure lye soap..just so long as there is no MOISTURIZER in the soap..but the purer the better.
So of COURSE i took in upon myself to try it out.
And it WORKS!!
Here is how you do it!
gather you ingredients..Borax and Arm and hammer Washing soda are not always easy to find..but I find Home Hardware carries all three ingredients I use.

Measure out ...
1 Cup Arm&Hammer Washing soda
1/2 Cup Borax
And grate your bar of soap on a cheese Grater. The finer the better.
In a stainless steel pot..add several cups of warm water and the grated soap..and bring it to a low boil..stirring until soap is melted.
While it is heating fill a five gallon pail with about 15 litres or 3-4 gallons of WARM water.
When your soap is melted..
Pour it into the warm water that is waiting in the bucket ..being sure to stir as you pour to mix it well.
Then you can go ahead and mix in your borax and A&H washing soda.
Once you have mixed your "soap up" Go ahead and cover with a towel or lid and let stand undisturbed for 24-36 hours. What you will end up with is a slick jelly like liquid that is just as good as any other laundry soap on the market..without the additives and perfumes!
Use 1/2 to 3/4 Cup in your was for regular loads..3/4 to 1 cup for large loads. This is a low Sudsing Soap ..so don't add more to your wash if you don't see suds...More is NOT better.
* If you have hard water you can add an extra half cup of the A&H and an extra 1/4 cup of the Borax to the mix..and it might be a good Idea to use spring water or distilled water for the soap itself if yours is hard.
I worked it out to about between 2.7 and 3 cents a load..and think of all the PLASTIC BOTTLES you no longer have to buy!!!
I saved my last two laundry soap bottles and just refill them!

Freezing veggies without Plastic bags
Hey Folks!!
Here is how I Freeze Veggies without Plastic baggies.
I Buy a 900 foot roll of Butcher Paper from the local packaging supply store..I have had it almost a year and not used half of it..and I USE it to wrap everything from meat to bread. But today there was a sale on FRESH Brocoli and Cauliflower..so I bought a whack of it...Blanched it and warpped it for freezing...Normally butcher paper is fine on its own..but after blanching veggies they have a tendancy to retain some water from that process...so I add a sheet of waxed paper also.
I start with a sheet of each...

I place the desired amount of blanched veggies in the centre of the waxed paper.
I bring the ends together and roll them up.
I fold the ends in.
Then Close with elastics and label!
Voila! Ready for the freezer! And no plastic leaching into the food!
Sorry for the sour puss face..I wasn't ready for the picture when it snapped!
