Organic Fruit Trees

I want to raise apple trees organically, and I’ve read that you can protect apples by enclosing them in sandwich bags. Does that really work? I’d love to harvest some bug-free, chemical-free fruit!
I have personal experience with this technique and it does work, although not perfectly, and I’ve found an alternative I like better.
I have more than 20 heirloom apple, pear and quince trees on dwarf rootstock in my garden, and I’ve been fighting a long, drawn-out and — until recently — losing war against codling moths, the insects that cause worms in fruit with cores.
By luck, an organic orchardist visited me last year and he suggested I stop my annual angst and respond to the problem with something simple and practical — bagging the fruit at petal fall, thus protecting it from all sorts of attacking insects. His simple advice was to use Ziploc sandwich bags, which seemed like a good idea.
The practical problem with using sandwich bags for this purpose is that, while you can zip them tight around a cluster of fruit, you must also snip off the bottom corners so moisture doesn’t build up inside. However, the open corners don’t drain water quickly enough after a heavy rain, and I’ve found that if too much water remains in the bag, the fruit starts to cook in its own steam on hot July days. The holes in the bags also provide access for curculio beetles, another obnoxious fruit pest. (They leave brown, smile-shaped scars on your apples, which means the apples have been impregnated with beetle babies.) By using plastic bags, I had some perfect, unsteamed apples, yet I thought there must be a better way, and, indeed, I’ve found a strategy that I recommend to small orchardists.
I decided to make drawstring bags out of row cover fabric, which is sold by garden supply companies. I sized the bags at 6 by 6 inches, which allows room for fruit expansion. This plan is better than using plastic bags because the fabric exposes the fruit to natural light that ripens it; the bags dry out quickly after a rain so the fruit isn’t subject to a contained, humid environment; and there are no holes for insects to exploit.
The success of such a bagging operation must include the successful control of wildlife, because raccoons and squirrels are extremely adept at destroying both the bags and the fruit. I’ve solved this problem by using Tanglefoot, a sticky, gluelike substance you paint on the bark of your fruit trees. After the critters touch Tanglefoot or a similar product (there are several), they won’t attempt to go up the trees.

Why Long Term Food Storage?
It Just Makes Sense!!
For Many years I have been wrestling with the desire to make sure we had ENOUGH..I used to garden and can and stock pile..Over the years I have done a lot of growing..and I have figured out why I have the desire to stockpile food...BECAUSE IT MAKES SENSE!!
I am not necessarily talking about Prepping for the end of the world.. or anything so drastic.
Let me put it this way...you don't just buy ONE roll of toilet paper right?
If it goes on sale..most of us buy two packages...hedging against the cost going back up...whats wrong with that?
Being Prepared for emergencies is just smart. We have grown so complacent in this day in age with our technology that we don't even consider it failing.
Look at Japans recent Earthquakes? Iceland's Volcanic eruptions...Hurricane Katrina...The oil leak in the Gulf..doesn't effect us? Just look at the cost of gas...and when gas goes up EVERYTHING goes up..look at the economic crash in North America in the last few years..think that won't happen again??
All these things effect the cost of living...Let's scale DOWN a bit..what if your income was suddenly derailed? How would you feed your family for the 3-6 months it could take you to find a new job? What if it took longer? Do you have enough savings to live off of for that long..to cover all your bills?
Having said all that..I am not fear mongering..I am just saying..being properly prepared makes SENSE..especially in these chaotic times.
So if That make me a "Prepper" then so be it!!
We had a 5.5 earthquake here last year..and although We have our own half acre..raise a few animals..have a garden and do a lot of canning...That earthquake made me think..yes I have a well that I can drop a bucket down..but what if the casing gets cracked and the water is not potable?
Yes we raise a lot of our own stuff..but what about the stuff we can't raise and have to buy? And maybe most importantly...When was the last time you saw food prices go DOWN over a period of time instead of UP?
So..I have begun to rethink the way I shop!
When I shop..I buy in as much BULK as I can..and what I don't need over the next two weeks..I store...I have also just tried my hand at Mylar food storage for the first time and am quite pleased with the results.
Mylar is a plastic/foil layered bag that when properly utilized can store most dry food up to 20 years. These I am using for when I bulk buy my flour..Oatmeal..Navy and Kidney beans and rice...I can buy flour and oatmeal in large quantities at almost half the cost of the grocery store..so when I shop..I start at the larger places that sell flour and oats and rice in 15-40 pound bags.
These are things we don't eat every day...so need to be properly stored..but are indispensable if food prices go to high in the event of some economical/natural/or home based emergency, happens.
These are also things I can't raise on my half acre!!
My Aim is to have one years supply of food for my family on hand at any given time..and as I shop..I will use and rotate out the older stored items.
We are Building a pantry..and along with raising our few chickens, goats and ( soon to come) rabbits..My husband wants to take up hunting..This year I am hoping to can 3-4 times what I did last year..as what I managed last year did not last us until even February.
Anyway folks..just thought I would share!

Spring Approaches!!
Well..I can hope!
I don't know about anyone else..but I am getting ready for spring..Last year our simple life plan took another leap and we buit a barn and put in a garden!! The barn is small..and we discovered no big enough for a steer to grow in..but after this one is raised..we will not be raising another.
We have decided to stick with Goats ( so far so good)
We have two Does and a buck..and we have our fingers crossed that nature will takes its course...IE hoping for pregnant does!
We have laying hens..and a big rooster..who will be soup once I have safely hatched a new batch of chicks this spring in the incubator...and we are hoping to try our hand at rabbits! Now rabbits can take a back sat until after the steer goes..for one simple reason..we SHOULD be well stocked for me by then!
But next year our freezer stock will be Rabbit, Goat and Chicken...with the possibility of a turkey or two.
Last year I planted a decent sized garden for the first time in quite a few years...and As I did the very FIRST time I planted a garden..I planted to much, to close together..and it went HAYWIRE!! So this year I have a few new ideas to plant my staples.
My husband Bought me hanging topsy turvy tomatoes planters for this year...I think 4-6 will do.
I have 8-12 old tires..which I plan to stack 3 high..( away from the direct garden plot) paint white and fill with layers of compost..peat moss and soil..these I will plant my squash and pumpkins in and let them wander! ( last year they took over EVERYTHING..the only thing that survived were the tomatoes and pickling cucumbers)
With the tomatoes and squash NOT in the garden..I will have room to spread out my other staples in the garden..namely, Pickling cukes, Turnips, Beans and hopefully a row of cabbage.
I am hoping hubby will build us a TopBar Bee Hive that can free stand at the back of the garden. This will ( hopefully) give us honey, pollinate the flowers and plants, and help support the worlds bee population!
For those of you who don't follow my blog that closely..We are trying a lot of new things..well OLD actually..to simply our lives, and our health..and help the planet as well..So much of the environment is being stressed by massive industrial farms..and not just the environment..people are no longer linked to the food they eat. The link between the living growing part and the grocery store wrapped package is being lost..and when we lose that link..we lose the respect for life itself.
Anyway that's my rant for today! I will do my best to keep you all updated on how our little half acre homestead progresses!

This Holiday Season
What is Christmas to me?
Over the years I have heard and been a part of many a debates on the origins of faith, religion and Christianity..Don't misunderstand me..I am NO theologian or scholar...but I think there comes a time in everyones life when they ask themselves..Is there a God out there? If so where do I fit in? I was raised in the basic christian belief peppered with Catholic origins..My family attended church spordically..mostly for funerals and weddings..I found myself at a very young age slipping into churches whenever the mood struck me..never really concerned with WHICH church I entered..usually it was because I heard music playing or being sung. Growing up the first Twelve years of my life in Toronto..there seemed to be a church on every corner. I was an inquisitive child...and I asked a lot of questions about God and Jesus...especially around Christmas time ...Why trees? Why Lights? WHere did Santa fit in..The answers my parents gave seemed to fit at the time..but as I grew older..they seemed less Satifactory. One year, close to the holiday season..A cousin who was a converted Jehovah witness REALLY got me confused..because she explained to me that..Christmas trees and lights were part of the pagan religion and had NOTHING to do with Christianity..but were part of the pagan rituals of solstice and the festival of lights...that Christ was Born in Sept...and many other confusing statements. So I was back where I started! The truth is...some 25 years later...that I have No religion...
That is not to say I have no faith...because I do...Many of the trappings of Christmas, I enjoy because they are of sentimental value of my childhood..But I no longer feel the need to place my beliefs in a tidy box and call them " Religion" Because the moment I subscribe to one religion..I am closing my mind and turning my back on a MULTITUDE of possibilities for discovery!
So what DO I believe?
I believe...
-That there is a God...and not only does this supreme being love me..he LIKES me just the way I am..
-I believe that Jesus was the son of God because HE believed he was...
-I believe that the bible is a good book to be learned from...but if you take it word for word as law..then the bible becomes your God...Even IF the bible IS the exact word of God..it becomes fallible the moment the first man put pen to paper to record it.. because MAN is fallible.
-I believe That having something to believe IN is more important that WHAT you believe.
It's not about who is right and who is wrong...Faith should always be about two things...LOVE and HOPE...If you carry love in one hand and hope in the other..you have no hand to pick up a rock and throw at someone else!!
May the Joy of Life Fill your heart with Light, Laughter and Love!

It Starts with one change...
Last year my brother sent me an article on the garbage patches that float in our worlds oceans...Yesterday it was on Oprah..and you can find it on YouTube. Just look up The Garbage Patch. At the present the one in the pacific Ocean is larger than the state of Texas and some 90 FEET DEEP in places...these floating garbage dumps are made up primarily..or almost totally comprised of plastics..We have all heard and discussed such things are Carbon foot prints...recycling...composting and the like...I am trying very hard not to sound like I am preaching...I just want to DO something...and this is all I can think of at the moment..please let me share...When I was a little girl...there were no such things as plastic grocery bags...sandwich bags..water bottles..even pop bottles were glass and could be returned for a deposit...( which sent many a kid in my neighborhood bottle hunting for Saturdays candy) On Grocery day..I carefully flattened out and refolded the paper grocery bags to take to the local second hand store on Queen st in Toronto..where the elderly gentleman would pay me 2 cents for every bag..3 if the bag was of the larger variety and hand twine handles! Recycling is not new to me...not new to many of us...it is just so MUCH MORE IMPORTANT these days..because plastic is EVERYWHERE...So as I am so fond of doing..I have made a few steps backwards in my life..trying to retrace some of the roots that are now so important to saving our world..It only takes ONE choice..ONE simple decision...about a year ago..I realized how many plastic sandwich bags I was using on a daily basis...THOUSANDS a year...so I took a step back and time and remembered that my mother used to use waxed paper..still garbage..but a more biodegradable version...Last week my husband decided not to buy a coffee a Tim Hortons everyday..and opted out for me to make him a thermos to see him through the day..last week I stopped using palstic grocery bags for his lunches and now I use either paper or a cloth bag...I carry recycled sturdy grocery bags in my vehicles and do my best to remember to use them...Last week I went to the local IGA where they no longer offer plastic grocery bags..but the new recycled re-usables at 50cents each or paper...I compost and recycle as much as possible...I use only compact flourescent bulbs or LED lights in my home...These are all choices that MANY of us make everyday..and bless you for it! All I am trying to say..is ONE CHOICE...ONE DECISION..can make a HUGE difference....Please....PLEASE lets make that choice today...before its to late!! Passs this on and see how far we can go! If you have ideas please feel free to add them and pass them forward also!
Thanks for bearing with me!!
