I don't know about anyone else..but I am getting ready for spring..Last year our simple life plan took another leap and we buit a barn and put in a garden!! The barn is small..and we discovered no big enough for a steer to grow in..but after this one is raised..we will not be raising another.
We have decided to stick with Goats ( so far so good)
We have two Does and a buck..and we have our fingers crossed that nature will takes its course...IE hoping for pregnant does!
We have laying hens..and a big rooster..who will be soup once I have safely hatched a new batch of chicks this spring in the incubator...and we are hoping to try our hand at rabbits! Now rabbits can take a back sat until after the steer goes..for one simple reason..we SHOULD be well stocked for me by then!
But next year our freezer stock will be Rabbit, Goat and Chicken...with the possibility of a turkey or two.
Last year I planted a decent sized garden for the first time in quite a few years...and As I did the very FIRST time I planted a garden..I planted to much, to close together..and it went HAYWIRE!! So this year I have a few new ideas to plant my staples.
My husband Bought me hanging topsy turvy tomatoes planters for this year...I think 4-6 will do.
I have 8-12 old tires..which I plan to stack 3 high..( away from the direct garden plot) paint white and fill with layers of compost..peat moss and soil..these I will plant my squash and pumpkins in and let them wander! ( last year they took over EVERYTHING..the only thing that survived were the tomatoes and pickling cucumbers)
With the tomatoes and squash NOT in the garden..I will have room to spread out my other staples in the garden..namely, Pickling cukes, Turnips, Beans and hopefully a row of cabbage.
I am hoping hubby will build us a TopBar Bee Hive that can free stand at the back of the garden. This will ( hopefully) give us honey, pollinate the flowers and plants, and help support the worlds bee population!
For those of you who don't follow my blog that closely..We are trying a lot of new things..well OLD actually..to simply our lives, and our health..and help the planet as well..So much of the environment is being stressed by massive industrial farms..and not just the environment..people are no longer linked to the food they eat. The link between the living growing part and the grocery store wrapped package is being lost..and when we lose that link..we lose the respect for life itself.
Anyway that's my rant for today! I will do my best to keep you all updated on how our little half acre homestead progresses!
